13th Dec 2017 #GujaratElection2017 Chronicles
Gujarat polls’ concluding phase 2 polling begins tomorrow to decide fate of 14 districts including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Vadodara. First phase saw low voter turnout so all parties are trying to increase polling tomorrow. 2.22 crore voters will use 25,575 polling booths to cast votes. With 350 independents, total 851 candidates are in the arena tomorrow.
Second phase will decide Dy CM Nitin Patel’s fate who is pitted against Jivabhai Patel of Congress. Traditionally a safe BJP seat Mehsana has got Nitin Patel worried after upset Patidars challenge and pledge to defeat him. Nitin Patel’s campaign has come under strong fire and had to abandon several times.
Radhanpur has young OBC activist turned politician Alpesh Thakor from Congress against an upset Congress deserter Lavingji Thakor from BJP. Alpesh has a track record of an impressive social reform of liberating OBCs from deadly clutches of alcoholism that destroyed the fabric of a large part community in supposedly ‘Dry’ Gujarat where alcohol is freely available. Pitted against him is ex Congressman Lavingji Thakor who got upset at ticket denial and subsequently joining BJP.
Other high profile faces in fray sees on Vatva seat BJP’s minister of state, Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja, former health minister Jay Narayan Vyas from Siddhpur who is banking on support from Balvantsinh Rajput, Kshatriya leader who broke away from Congress at the time of Raja Sabha election (Ahmed Patel). Balvantsinh defeated Vyas in 2012 and is the richest politician officially. Siddhpur has significant Rajput numbers and Rajputs are divided this time after their agitation against BJP and then rocky patch up that was scuttled by Paresh Rawal jibe. 13 candidates contesting tomorrow.
Dholka seat has another BJP minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama. Dabhoi seat has Congress heavyweight Siddharth Patel. Jignesh Mevani is contesting from Vadgam on the plank of Dalit activism. Una Dalit atrocities is fresh in memory of people here.
Ahmedabad district has 21 total seats which will bring largest share to BJP’s kitty if things go well after all the upheavals lately. Congress has targeted 16 out of these. Ahmedabad city has 14 seats and all are with BJP. If Congress breaks this equation then they could succeed in their toughest quest in urban stronghold.
Second phase has crucial Mehsana, Visnagar, Unjha, Radhanpur, Vijapur which are strong Patidar dominated seats. North Gujarat and parts of Ahmedabad district have OBCs in significant numbers so odds are almost equal this time which traditionally were in favour of BJP. .
